Kuala
Lumpur, the commercial hub
of the country, has its
fair share of famous landmarks,
historical relics and heritage
buildings and a pulsating
night life to keep visitors
occupied day and night.
Coupled with this, there
is the excitement of shopping
within the cool comfort
of ultra-modern, one-stop
shopping complexes and the
thrill of browsing among
antiques and curios in the
old part of the city. |

| Central
Market :: |
 |
|
|
|
A
favourite spot to watch
craft making, painting and
to buy souvenirs among both
locals and tourists is the
Central Market. This former
wet market has been transformed
into a modern, air-conditioned
shopping bazaar with a wide
variety of local crafts
and souvenirs for sale.
It is also well-known for
its food outlets where the
best of local cuisine is
served. Across the Central
Market is the 'Goldsmiths
Row', jewellery shops where
gold, diamonds, jade and
other precious stones are
offered at reasonable prices.
Other major handicraft and
souvenir outlets are the
Kompleks Budaya Kraf at
Jalan Conlay, the Infokraf
Centre at Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin
and the Batik Malaysia Berhad
outlets in the city centre.
These establishments offer
exquisite silverware, pewter,
wood carvings, batik or
brocade (songket). One should
also visit the Royal Selangor
factory at Setapak where
a fascinating range of pewter-ware
such as mugs, goblets, cutlery,
ash trays and figurines
are available.For a sample
of something uniquely Malaysian,
visit Chinatown in Petaling
Street, dubbed 'The Bargain
Centre'. This is one of
the busiest and most colourful
parts of the city. At night,
the midsection of the street
is closed to traffic and
the entire area is transformed
into a bustling, brightly-lit
night market. Another important
shopping precinct is Jalan
Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Along
both sides of this busy
road are rows of shops selling
a variety of merchandise:
clothing, shoes, cosmetics,
sports goods, household
items, electrical and electronic
products. |
